Film Critic /Essayist / Festival Advisor
Dalton L has served on the music jury of Mahatma Gandhi University, and the film jury of the Indian Film Institute. He has spoken at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). And is on the advisory board of an international film festival. He is the co-author of a book on cinema, and is presently co-authoring another. He started his journalistic career writing for The Hindu. A few months later, he was offered the post of associate editor of India’s #1 music magazine. Following that, he covered music shows and reviewed music for the Times of India group. He reviewed Hollywood films for The Film Street Journal, and Malayalam films for Upperstall and the Deccan Chronicle. In addition to being a writer, he is also a prolific cameraman with around ten years of experience as a documenter of reality, and has briefly captured in moving images a variety of performers ranging from Pt. Jasraj and Trilok Gurtu to America, Shaggy, Enrique Iglesias, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heap, and Dire Straits; and has as much experience as a film production person. He regularly screens good cinema, and encourages upcoming filmmakers. He is presently setting up a film studio, House of Illusions, and shooting five cinematic essays. He is on the verge too of editing-publishing a magazine—Cinematic Illusions.

Film literature

“Understanding a twin-subgenre: new- and mixed-gen cinema of Malayalam” is the chapter he wrote for the Federation of Film Societies of India book, ‘Indian Film Culture: Indian Cinema’. He is presently authoring a book on film grammar with references to Indian films.

Festival circuit

He has served on the music jury of MG University. And on quite a few film juries, including the Indian Film Institute and the Chalachitram National Film Festival. He’s also on the advisory board of the Kautik International Student Film Festival

Filmmaking

He is presently writing-directing three cinematic essays—‘Alphabets of cinema’, ‘The legacy of Khemchand Prakash’, and ‘Through the lenses of the sacred trio—Ritwik Ghatak, Satyajit Ray, and Mrinal Sen’.
